HP 15s Review 2026: The 'Safe Bet' for Engineering Students
If you walk into a college library in India, 50% of the laptops you see will be the HP 15s. Why?
Because while Lenovo and Acer fight for "Cheapest Price," HP focuses on being the "Safe Bet." It looks professional (like a MacBook), it has a better service network, and it doesn't feel like a cheap toy.
But in 2026, is the HP 15s (Ryzen 5 Edition) still the king of mid-range laptops, or is it getting too old? I tested it to find out.
The "Natural Silver" finish makes it look 2x more expensive than it is.
⚠️ Engineering Student Alert: The "Naming" Scam
This is the most important part of this review. Please read carefully.
HP sells two versions of this laptop that look identical:
- Option A: Ryzen 5 7520U (Newer Name)
- Option B: Ryzen 5 5500U (Older Name)
You might think "7000 series" is better because the number is bigger. WRONG.
The 7520U has only 4 Cores. The older 5500U has 6 Cores.
For engineering (Coding/Multitasking), 6 Cores is ALWAYS better. Do not get tricked by the new number. This review recommends the 5500U (6-Core) version.

1. Design & Build: The "Premium" Illusion
The Lenovo V15 is unapologetically plastic. The HP 15s is also plastic, but HP uses a "Natural Silver" paint finish that mimics aluminum.
Why this matters: If you are taking this to an internship interview, the HP 15s looks like a professional machine. It is also surprisingly light (1.69 kg). You can carry this in your backpack all day without back pain.
2. Performance: The 6-Core Beast
We are reviewing the Ryzen 5 5500U variant here. I threw a heavy workload at it:
- Chrome: 15 Tabs open (YouTube, Notion, ChatGPT).
- Coding: VS Code running a Python script.
- Background: Spotify playing music.
Result: Zero lag. The 6-Core processor eats through multitasking tasks. If you are a CS/IT student, this machine will easily last you through your 3rd year projects.
3. Keyboard & Trackpad
The Keyboard: HP keyboards are generally "mushier" (softer) than Lenovo's. This is great for long typing sessions as it is quiet. It has a dedicated Number Pad, which is a lifesaver for entering data in Excel or doing calculations.
The Trackpad: It is decent, but lacks separate buttons (it's a clickpad). It works fine for gestures, but I highly recommend buying a ₹300 mouse for serious work.

❌ The Compromises
- The Screen: Like most budget laptops, color accuracy (45% NTSC) is low. Not for professional photo editing.
- Heating: The fan can get loud if you try to play heavy games.
- Webcam: 720p camera is "okay" for Zoom, but grainy in low light.
🎓 Final Verdict: The Safe All-Rounder
If the Lenovo V15 is for the "Power User on a Budget," the HP 15s is for the "Smart Student."
It balances performance, battery life, and brand value perfectly. If you want a laptop that looks good, works hard, and won't embarrass you in a meeting, this is the one.
My Recommendation: Buy the 16GB RAM version if you can afford the extra ₹2,000. It makes the laptop future-proof for 4 years.
